SAT vs NAT vs LCAT vs NET: which test should you take?

Last verified

Take the SAT if you want to apply abroad or keep several options open, since it is accepted by LUMS, NUST and universities worldwide. Take NAT for NTS-associated universities such as COMSATS, LCAT if LUMS is your only target, and NET for NUST’s regular entry route.

Many strong students take both a local test and the SAT. The skills overlap: SAT preparation in algebra, grammar and reading helps with NAT, NET and LCAT too.

The biggest difference

Local tests reward speed across many short questions and subject knowledge from FSc. The SAT tests reasoning with fewer questions, more time per question, and no separate physics or chemistry. Students used to memorization often find the SAT’s reading and data questions the hardest part, so start with a diagnostic to see where you stand.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SAT better than NAT?

Neither is better; they serve different purposes. The SAT is accepted abroad and by LUMS and NUST’s SAT seats, while NAT is used by NTS-associated universities in Pakistan.

Can I apply to LUMS with the SAT instead of LCAT?

Yes. LUMS accepts the SAT, ACT or LCAT for its business, humanities and social sciences, and law schools.

Can I get into NUST with the SAT?

Yes. NUST offers SAT-based seats through a separate application, and the SAT replaces the NET weightage for national candidates.

How long is a NAT score valid?

A NAT result is typically valid for one year from the test date.

Is the SAT harder than NAT?

It is different. The SAT has fewer questions and more reasoning; NAT is faster and includes subject knowledge.
